Beginners

French imageThis 20-hour course is designed to introduce students to the basics of the French language (the ‘survival’ level). Students will acquire basic awareness of pronunciation and linguistic characteristics such as word gender, verb conjugation and pronouns. In addition, a range of useful expressions for everyday communicative contexts will be acquired, such as greetings and introductions, talking about yourself, buying food and ordering at a restaurant, booking a room in a hotel, asking for directions, talking about likes and dislikes.

This course is aimed at complete beginners who may wish to have a taste of what learning the language may entail before committing to a more intensive course. It is also suitable for students who would like to acquire an awareness of the language before visiting France.

This course will be mostly communicative. Students wishing to consolidate the language fully and to practice areas such as writing and reading in greater depth are advised to join the Beginner course on our separate Evening Class Programme.

Course materials will be prepared by the teacher and introduced depending on the needs and ability of the group. Students can expect to cover most of the following:

1. Meeting people: greetings and goodbyes. Understanding formal and informal ways of addressing others;
2. Nationalities and occupations. Question words. First numbers (0-20);
3. Talking about oneself and family. Numbers (20-100);
4. Places in town. Directions;
5. Transport. Telling the time. Buying a train/bus ticket;
6. Ordering drinks;
7. Food vocabulary. Ordering a meal. Likes and dislikes;
8. Shopping and asking for prices. Numbers (100+);
9. Booking a room in a hotel. Basic phone conversations.

Conversation

French imageThis course is designed as a one-hour per week guided conversation class for students at Intermediate levels (A2 to B1) allowing them to revise and consolidate their communicative skills (listening & speaking).

Being an Intermediate-level conversation class, this course is suitable for students who can communicate beyond GCSE level and who would like to brush up on existing skills and/or add oral practice to any other course they are already attending. The course will help students gain confidence in oral communication, improve their pronunciation and increase their vocabulary to tackle a range of communicative contexts pertinent to everyday life.

Materials will be designed depending on the needs of the group. Subjects for conversation will include familiar topics, and topics of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life, as well as current affairs and society & culture.
